Hey guys.

So I just tried booting up and logging in and I cant because I cant type anything into the password input screen at login, and the lights on my keyboard are not lighting up. I did not do anything different, but it is concerning.

The mousepad does work as I can move around the cursor and I intend on getting an external keyboard today, and I am praying that works. Is this usually a quick fix I your experience?

You've tried powering down and restarting?

You'd be surprised the number of times a simple power cycle fixing things. 😃

Does the keyboard work after some time or has it completely stopped working now? You might also want to try reset the PRAM/SMC to see if that will do anything.

It's odd for a MBP's keyboard to stop working unless there's been damage to it like a liquid spill or something.

And have you tried booting into recovery? The keyboard issue may be something you installed that's gone south.

Yeah, this sounds like a hardware issue that Apple can sort out for you under AppleCare.

So I was working away on it last night using an external keyboard, doing some very heavy processing on FCPX, and I hear the sound you hear when a button is pressed down continuously, it's as if I was mashing the keyboard. Then nothing, but my laptop keyboard is working again. Very weird, but very happy its back.

Any suggestions as to what I can do about finding out what caused this? Its a new expensive laptop and I would like to get on top of things

As per your own suggestion: contact Apple Care.

As you said, “it’s new & expensive”.:)

Sounds like stuck key that became unstuck or I can't rule out an app acting up? The fact an external keyboard works makes me lean toward hardware. Resetting the SMC and PRAM won't hurt. As an owner of an MBP M1 max, I would definitely make a date with Apple. I too create video content and if this is a hardware issue nothing says fun like a deadline for a project and a sick computer.

And sometimes, a complete full Shut Down, wait 30-40 seconds, and thenm Start Up can be more successful at rectifying a Mac problem.
