MacBook Pro is not recognizing my external drive

It seems either my time machine or external hard drive isn't working. Today I made sure the HD is connected directly into my mac and directly into wall socket.

The following is the message I've been getting:
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “TOURO”
The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk.

Latest successful backup: February 1, 2020

Can someone help with this?

See if the external disk appears in Disk Utility when it is connected to your MBP and powered on. If so, then run Repair Disk over it. If it does not appear time for a replacement as all drives die sooner or later.
