I am getting ready to replace my Hard Drive, Mid 2011, on my MacBook Pro. I am using OS X 10.10 so what is the process or instructions for formatting and setting up the intial load? I looked on the Apple Support site but couldn't find any instructions. I still have the original disks if I need to start over but would rather install what I have and then reload my backup.

- Format the HD to be used by a Macintosh computer.
- Install the OS
- Install any previous apps that were on the old HD…that you want on the new HD.

Of course if you have a backup of your old HD…this process can be made MUCH easier.:)

Thanks pig003 but how do I boot the Mac without a CD/DVD? Is there a way to load the OS boot files on a USB drive and do it that way? I have never had to format a MAC drive before, plenty of times on PC but you have a Boot disk/USB to work from when you do that. New Experiences are exciting but I am cautious so I don't mess something up.

Thanks the drive gets here today and I will work through it. Unfortunately when I tried to run diagnostics I can never get it to go into diagnostic mode holding down the D key when starting up. I tried to insert the original CD in the drive and boot the Apple Tools but it wouldn't work either and now I can't get the CD out of the drive. I have tried all the tricks located in this Forum (booting up holding down the mouse key or touchpad, tring to eject using the Firmware holding down the Control and Command keys while holding the O and F keys but none of them work. If you have any ideas please let me know.
