MacBook Pro freezes on exit from WiFi

Older MacBook Pro (mid-2007) running OS 10.9.5. Turn on Wifi when I get on the Internet. Sometimes (not always) the MacBook will freeze after I turn off the Wifi. When it freezes, the fan runs fast and the computer gets extremely hot. Have searched for an answer on the Internet, but haven't found any solutions. Does anyone have an idea what is going on?

Can you get to Activity Monitor.app when this happens and see what might be running amok???

It's possible this could be a hardware or software issue.

If it's a hardware issue...then the Airport Card may need to be replaced (a replacement Airport card is less than $5.00 US from Powerbookmedic):

Mac Airport Card - 661-4058 661-3890

If it's software issue (could be due to a software conflict)...I would try creating a new user account...reboot the computer...and log into this new account.

By doing this you can eliminate the possibility of most software conflicts...since this new account acts as if only the macOS is installed & no additional apps.

I was just going to add that I am also running Mavericks OS 10.9.5 on my mid 2011 27" iMac and turning on/off Wi-Fi works fine using the Wi-Fi Menu Icon. No freezing, nada...

I am also using the last generation Airport Express connected to our ISP's router via Ethernet if that makes any difference, but it is only used by my wife's iPhone and our iPads and they are left connected at all times.

Any reason why you don't run wifi constantly?

Guess I am paranoid. Have been doing this ever since I had a Powerbook. When I am finished on the internet, I disconnect from Wifi through the menu and close the laptop. Thought it might keep me safe from hacking although I am going through the cable modem and my router.

Yes I have brought up Activity Monitor before turning off the Wifi. Using Chrome as my browser which sometimes makes the internal fan go crazy. Have thought Chrome might be the problem, but I have quit Chrome and then disconnected and still had the Mac to freeze when I disconnected from the Wifi.

Also, this doesn't happen every time I turn off the Wifi. Maybe one time out of ten times. Just enough to be annoying.

Save yourself the angst - leave wifi on and let the MBP go to sleep when you finish for the day. You are treating wifi as we did 20 years ago and had to pay for every minute.
