When I start up a game I purchased in the App Store my computer crashes. Sometimes but not overtime I get the message that my computer had to restart because of a problem. My question is why and how do I fix it?

**NOTE**: It only does this when I try to launch the game, the game loads to it's main menu and then the computer crashes.

This is what it said after it rebooted and I reported the problem.

That's not the full panic report. The next time it crashes, copy the full panic report to the clipboard and then post it here for us to look at. Also include full specs of your MacBook Pro and version of OS X you're running.

Yes, it was enough. You had a GPU crash (graphics processor) see below:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f8f94cf63): "GPU Panic: [<None>] 5 3 7f 0 0 0 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xc0000000 0xffffff80b47cb000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P3/4\n"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.7.21/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127

Your model MacBook Pro with dual graphics (NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and Intel HD Graphics) is known to have problems with the NVIDIA GPU. It was the subject of an Apple recall and free repair, however, that is no longer in effect.

What happened is when you ran that game it put stress on the GPU and caused the panic. It's probably going to happen over again whenever you run a graphics intensive program. Not much you can do about that without spending a bunch of money to change out the logic board.

If there's an Apple store nearby your home, you might take it on in to them and have them run diagnostics on it. The diagnostics are free as long as you use an Apple store to do them.

Dang, well thanks for the help. This macbook was gifted to me by a friend so I have no warranty on it or anything like that. And the nearest apple store to me is in another state. Thanks for your help anyway.

Also what kind of a logic board would you recommend?

The logic board is the "motherboard" and a very expensive item. Only an exact Apple replacement can be used. Prices can vary anywhere from $300 to $500 for a logic board. If the machine was a gift, I would just use it as is until it went out all together. In the meantime, save your $ for a new MacBook Pro.

I would recommend something still call apple support still ask them if there is anything that can be done for the machine because you would be surprised apple might still fix it a lady in my macslug computer group bought a 2011 macbook pro used and got the cd drive replace for free from apple with no warranty at all i would call and see if they can still fix it

Well I found a "fix" to the issue. I found an app called gfxcardstatus and it lets you choose which graphics card you will be using. The nvidia or the intel hd. If I make it use the intel hd the game runs perfect(I also set all of the settings like resolution and what not to low).

Thanks to everyone for the help though!

That's a good solution without spending any $$ since the app is free. By the way, another benefit of using GfxCardStatus is that it saves your battery. But don't forget to start saving your pennies for a new machine since that fix is only temporary. ;)
