What programs did you install? Usually "ad-ware" is not a problem.

I watch the video learn mac in one hour from YouTube.com. He advised to download VLC a video player and flash I did both of those and now I have adware.

Thanks so much for your time and help with removing adware.

I have two questions which might help clarify whether you have adware and what adore you have:

1. What behavior on the Mac leads you to suspect adware? Knowing what the pop ups are may help identify what needs to be removed. Also is pop-up blocking turned on in your browser?
2. This is more a matter of curiosity / additional info. Where did you download the software from? Download.com and Softronic seem to be serving up software loaded with adware these days.

Don't download anything from Softonic or MacUpdate, and get AdwareMedic and use it toether with AdBlock Plus and Ghostery.

I strongly AGREE with the warning about Softonic and strongly DISAGREE with the claim that MacUpdate is a bad site. Perhaps you meant Versiontracker/download.com?

I know the guys at MacUpdate personally, know how incredibly hard they work to make MacUpdate so great. I give them my absolute highest recommendation.

I just downloaded AdwareMedic from the SafeMac site and ran a scan just out of curiosity. I didn't expect to find anything but surprise surprise there was a single file left over from my removal of Geneio over a year ago.
I very handy app indeed. All thanks for the link from cradom.;)

I do respect your opinion chas m regarding MacUpdate. What think you of this and would also add CNET to the list of avoids

Well, for starters I think its a reddit post, so it's about two steps above a 4chan post.

But even assuming it was true, that was eight months ago. If someone uploaded a rogue version of the software, MacUpdate's users would be VERY quick to alert Misha and the team, and MU would subsequently remove the download and suspend the uploader.

There is, I think, a huge difference between a site that accidentally gets some adware uploaded to it, and a site like Softonic that relies on this for their business model.
