Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

• 8GB for 4K editing, 3D titles, and 360° video editing
• Metal-capable graphics card.
• 1GB of VRAM for 4K editing, 3D titles, and 360° video editing

Your CPU is too slow, you don't have enough memory.

If your workflow requires you to edit 4k video, you need to a newer/better machine.

Assuming the machine is from 2012'ish, then the decade is long enough for the machine. The newer Apple Silicon based Macs are much better performers.

We have a new Mac as well and it has constant button/mouse issues along with other things. is it possible to take out the two (2GB)and replace them with two 4GB? I would rather spend a few hundred $ on my old Mac then have to buy a another new one.

You gave us some good computer spec's/details in post #1...but didn't actually tell us what computer model it is. Sounds to me that it's either an older Apple portable computer...or a Mac-Mini.

In either case the video hardware is not upgradeable in either of these computer types.

Sounds like the RAM is upgradable...and the storage is upgradeable (that's all that can be upgraded). If you installed more RAM...and replaced the "spinner" HD with an SSD...these upgrades should help with some tasks & make the computer "feel" faster. But these upgrades will not turn it into a fast 4K video editing machine.

As Raz0rEdge mentioned...take the money you would spend on upgrades for your current computer + additional...and get yourself a used M1 based Apple computer.:)

it is a MacBook Pro portable. It has a newer SSD I installed a few years back works great. I guess after hearing your reply as well as razor I will need to use our newer Mac.

My apologies...I see it was mentioned in the thread title that you have a 2012 MacBook Pro.

What newer Mac do you have?

we have a 2018 MacBook . 8gb ram and not sure what all it has. It only has I7 not M1 so maybe that is why it sucks. It is slower then my 2012 but my wife uses it as well and she puts a bunch of junk on it which fills the storage.

I'm assuming it's a 2018 MacBook Pro (13" model with an i7 CPU).

Compared to a 2012 MacBook Pro...the 2018 MacBook Pro has CPU benchmarks that are 3x faster than the 2012. Video hardware on the 2018 MacBook Pro should also be vastly faster than the 2012 MacBook Pro.

If you're considering upgrading (and don't need portability)...a used M1 Mac-Mini would be way way way faster than the 2012.

M1 Mac-Mini's have been out for almost 3 years (released November, 2020)...M2 Mac-Mini's were released January, 2023. Might be able to find a good used M1 Mac-Mini at decent price.

Just an idea in case you were looking to upgrade. M1 Mac-Mini a very good price/performance upgrade.
