Hi guys,
Here is the problem I am having with my MacBook Air. Whenever I use a program that allows me to use sound I capture with the mic (Skype, or even the System Preferences sound pane), the mic will be active for a few seconds and then it just dies.
It stays dead for a little while, then if I try again a few minutes later, it does the same thing. For example, I can open the System Preferences sound pane, and it shows me the sound levels which fluctuate as I talk indicating it is working properly. But about 5-6 seconds later the indicators stop and no more sound is recognized.
I can close the System Preferences pane, open it a minute or two later, and it will do the same thing.
Also, this problem appears on Skype.
I have not made any changes to my system when this started occuring. I was using 10.5.4 for quite a while and used Skype just the other day for about two hours perfectly. This morning I tried to use it again and this problem presented itself.
I upgraded to 10.5.5 just a few minutes ago to see if that would resolve the issue but it has not.
Any ideas? Could this be software or hardware? My instinct as a tech would say its hardware, but the fact that every time I restart the Preferences Pane or Skype the mic works again for the same amount of time indicates it may be software (if it was hardware it either would or wouldn't work or would randomly come on and off instead of in a predictable pattern)
Any suggestions?
I am in Australia right now and my AppleCare (along with my mac) were bought in the USA. I read the terms of service in Apple Care and it doesn't look like they will cover anything while I am overseas, unless I misread it. I also can't part with this laptop as I am using it for school right now and my iMac is back home in the US of A
