Fyi: the 2015 and 2017 Air will work with a nvme drive if you use the correct adapter.
I'm running an HP ex900 in an early 2015 on Mojave with no issues other than slightly higher battery drain during use.
Super fast nvme drives will have their speed limited in an 2015 and 2017 Air since they have a pci-e 2.0 x 4 bus while the 15" 2015 has a pci-e 3.0 x 4 bus; therefore, the read and write speeds of an nvme drive should be very close to or slightly faster than an Apple SSD while being a relatively inexpensive upgrade.I was just reading about those drives and the differences, mainly to just learn more, and man, there are sure some nice FAST drives available out there, assuming everything is compatible:
Why is NVMe better than SATA and mSATA

And not that huge of an expense for those who want or need FAST drive access SPEED really. Just a relative extra cost.
