MacBook Air Backlit Keyboard Issue - System Preferences??

After a recent screen repair, my son's backlit keyboard stopped working on his MacBook Air (2019). He has tried the usual fixes (F5, F6, sensor block and SMC reset) but to no avail. Unfortunately, the Backlit Keyboard options seem to have disappeared from his system preferences too! Any suggestions appreciated:)

It sounds like someone missed the connection when the screen was repaired.
