My mac recently started shutting down when I put it in sleep mode. I use my computer throughout the day, so I've had to keep it running all day, to avoid it shutting down multiple times each day. Any ideas on what's causing this or how to fix it? Thanks.

I'm running Yosemite - 10.10.4 - early 2008 Mac Pro - 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - 8 GB 800 MHZ DDR2 FB-DIMM

Try resetting the SMC. See the following Apple KB article: LINK

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it, but it didn't help completely. Now when I put the computer to sleep, it semi-shuts down - I can wake it with wiggling the mouse, but it does a blank gray screen restart with status bar, then opens the desktop to where it was prior with all apps and pages still open. Any ideas on why it goes to the blank screen? Thanks.

It sounds like it's sleeping but upon waking it's loading everything back in from memory. Hopefully one of our Mac Pro guys will have some idea of what's happening. It almost appears your machine is hibernating rather than sleeping. How much free room is there on your hard drive?

It says there's 212 GB available. It is hibernating instead of sleeping. =(

My computer instantly goes into hibernation mode when I put it in sleep mode. Does anyone know how to fix this so it just stays in regular sleep mode? Thanks.

Is this when plugged into AC adaptor or on battery?

212GB is free space not memory. However it may be overhating. How long since you opened her up and given a good clean out? I used to use a vacuum cleaner with a rubber sticky beak and give it a good go, then turn to exhaust and bow it out. Pay particular attention to the front fan, at the bottom of the case ifn front of the CPUs.

I just had it cleaned and had more memory installed about 2 months ago. I also downloaded a temperature app and it seems to stay in the 95 - 115 degree range.

This is what is says about the memory -

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1:

Size: 4 GB
Type: DDR2 FB-DIMM
Speed: 800 MHz
Status: OK

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2:

Size: 4 GB
Type: DDR2 FB-DIMM
Speed: 800 MHz
Status: OK

I'm a novice when it comes to computers, as you can tell, so this has me stumped. Thanks.

I don't know the solution to the problem but I can suggest a small workaround: change your energy saver settings to allow the display to sleep, but not the computer.

That's pretty much what I have done too. Set energy saver to 3hrs for both battery and AC adaptor for Disks and 1hr for display.
I have security settings set to require password on startup and wake.
So if I open the lid it starts immediately, just requires my password.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have it set so that the computer never sleeps but the monitor does.

Do you know if it hurts the computer to go into hibernation mode multiple times a day?
