Mac OSX 10.5.8 won't boot

This is, unfortunately, the second time I have experienced the following problem.

When I turn on my MacBook, the screen goes to the regular gray-with-apple, spinning disk just below. Then, it changes to blue. Sometimes, I am able to see the pointer in the upper left hand corner, other times there is only a small white square. From there, the screen changes to different colors of blue over and over again while a spinning disk appears, disappears, reappears, never actually booting the computer.

I have tried all the methods listed here: Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier) , but to no effect. I have been able to save all my most important data via opening the hard drive in Target Disk Mode and dragging it onto a friend's computer. I have not been able to start in Safe Mode (the MacBook simply stays for longer on the gray apple screen before going into the flickering blue one), and I have tried the Disk Utility partitioning solution suggested in this thread: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os-x-operating-system/183585-mac-osx-10-5-5-wont-boot.html , but it also did not work.

The last time this happened I was in school and ultimately decided to re-install the entire system, which resulted in the loss of most of my data. However, I am currently at home for winter break and so do not have access to my OS installation disks, halfway across the world. Even if I did have them, last time I was not able to reinstall with the option of saving my data - I had to go for the whole shebang and wipe the system from the ground up. Ideally, I would like to avoid doing this.

If anyone has any ideas whatsoever, I would be extremely grateful. I have an appointment with an Apple Genius Bar set for Saturday morning, but would be really, really pleased to be able to solve this issue on my own - I'm just not comfortable with the fact that it's happened twice! It seems like the issue must be with the hardware, and yet everything seems to be running so smoothly, otherwise. If this is any clue at all as to what might be wrong with the computer - both situations occurred after I had rebooted the MacBook because it either would not recognize a printer, or would not install a program (Silverlight.dmg, for the latter). In the case of the former, the computer acknowledge that it was hooked up to a printer and seemed to be sending jobs, but there was no actual activity going on with the printer. Initially, I assumed this was a problem with an already finicky printer but tried to reboot just to see if it would help. Then catastrophe, and I was unable to turn the computer on at all. This time around, I was trying to install Silverlight and found that the installation process consistently stalled when the .dmg was searching for a disk onto which to write the program. It would say something to the effect of "searching other external devices" even though there were no external devices attached. Thinking a reboot might help, I gave it a go and ended up with the same disaster as before. Ick.

Thank you for any and all suggestions, tips, hints, solutions - I'm open to trying anything at this point. Please keep in mind that my only available tools are another MacBook and a FireWire. I don't have my installation/utility disks, and I don't have anything like Disk Warrior. I understand if either of these would be pertinent things to have, but they simply aren't available. Thanks again!

You really do not have any option other than the Genius appointment and it does sound like the drive may be on its last legs.

Ugh, really hope that's not the case. The MacBook is only about a year and two months old. Thanks for the sobering honesty, though.

Just to put an update on this, for folks out there who might run into similar problems:

Went to the Apple Genius bar today, and gave over my computer so that they could run diagnostics on the hard drive. The likelihood is that I'll have to get the hard drive replaced, which Apple can do, and which I am eager to let them do, as I am not that tech-savvy. All told, it will cost a sum more than $200. If it turns out the issue was not the hard drive, I'll post the conclusion to what ails have befallen the poor laptop later on.

If u have to go down the new HD path then u might want to think about bumping the capacity a bit - price difference may not be too large.

Yet another update: After testing, the Geniuses have concluded that there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. They now suspect the issue may be with the RAM, and though they have not tested it with a different RAM yet, one Genius has even suggested that I get the RAM replaced at a different location, or even do so myself if I'm confident in my ability to do so, as I would be able to upgrade the RAM for cheaper on my own than the cost for having Apple Geniuses replace it.

Hope this helps someone in the future! Will post the final verdict when I get it.

Id definitely try replacing the ram by yourself its very easy to do in most modern mac's. Ram is also fairly cheap now so it shouldn't be too hard to do, just go to crucial.com and select your computer from there list and it should give you some prices, it will be much cheaper than buying the ram from apple.

So, you didn't buy AppleCare before you passed 12 months?
Always a good idea for a laptop!

No, I didn't buy AppleCare. Very poor planning on my part! Won't be doing that again. May not even be buying a mac again! As may be evidenced by...

Yet another update! Turns out it wasn't the RAM at all. The RAM is doing just spiffy. The new idea is that the problem is with the logic board, and so the MacBook has been shipped off to the Magical Apple Tree In The Sky where it will hopefully be fixed and mailed back to me.

Minor issues have abounded, including that Apple employs FedEx, and therefore will not be able to ship my (purportedly) fixed computer directly to me, as apparently FedEx does not ship to P.O. boxes or dormitories. How terribly unfortunate. Will have to wait additional days for a relative to receive and mail my computer directly to me. Oh, Apple, I was under the impression life would be easier with you.

As ever, will update with news when there is any.

Dorms and PO Boxes are not fixed addresses though so you cant expect everyone to ship to there, these things are ideal for scammers. Don't think its fair to blame apple for this.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
The magical apple tree in the sky seems to be doing its best to look after you, even though you are out of warranty, and I suspect that you can look forward to your new replacement MacBook soon!
Be happy that you don't have a Dell..... but if you don't want to buy a mac again, that's your choice, maybe not the best choice, but it is yours to make :)

Hey folks, more nightmarish news!

Finally got my MacBook back today, after Apple initially sent it to the wrong address, only to discover that they had also replaced the wrong parts. Yippee! The hard drive and the RAM, which the local genius bar had established were not the problems, were replaced. Great. The logic board has not been touched.

Headed down to the genius bar near to my college tomorrow afternoon to see what can be done about getting a refund for the repairs I did not ask Apple to do and maybe getting repairs for something that will actually fix the machine.

Good luck with that. Awaiting the report...
