I'm having an issue with an old iMac G5 (PowerPC G5, Mac OSX 10.5.8). At some point the computer started having black squares attached to the mouse arrow and black squares overlaid on every icon.

System Preferences, Universal Access. Turn off "Voice Over".

Thanks, but my VoiceOver is off and the problem remains. The owner has lost the system disks as well, so no full restore.

Try turning it on - close out of System Preferences - go back in and turn it off.

That one didn't work either. I've also tried clearing the cache. It looks like the computer is corrupted somehow. Apple would never design a series of black squares that look like this. How can I post a picture of my desktop.

Click the Go Advanced button below the quick reply box - or use the Post Reply button - both take you to the same place.

On the next screen scroll down and use the Manage Attachments button to attach a pic.

Voice Over is what produces those boxes as far as default OS X apps though.

Try doing a SMC reset. Follow the Apple instructions for PPC not Intel machines. See this LINK. If that doesn't work, also try doing a NVRAM - PRAM reset. LINK
