I have been running Mac mail for about 6 years without any problems. Two days ago I started noticing that all of my inbox mail was missing. After a few hours of trying to figure out what was going on, I found the mail in the VIP folder. I don't have any addresses marked as VIP, I have never used the VIP option. Then I noticed that while deleting Junk Mail all read messages in the inbox were also deleted. I played around and found that any unread mail was kept in the inbox. When I erase junk mail, unread mail stays in the inbox, but read mail goes to the VIP folder. None of this makes any sense to me, and I am not a hacker, only an appliance operator so I don't know where to start to fix it. Does anybody have this happen? Like I said this is going on the 5th day.

What OS version are you running? I would suggest downloading Onyx which is a free maintenance utility. Make sure to get the version that matches your OS version. Click on the Maintenance tab and under Rebuilding select Mailboxes in Mail. It will take some time but it will rebuild your mailbox.

Some more info would help. Who is your Mail ISP and are you using IMAP or PoP?

Also make sure you're using the latest version of Apple Mail.

Lisa, I ran the program you suggested to repair the problems in my Mac Mail. Apparently, I can see no change in the symptoms or problems I was having. They appear to still be therre. I will let it take its course today and see if things improve. I won't know until I receive incoming messages in my inbox. Thanks,

Benny

Benny, I think we need answers to the questions posed in post #3. These are crucial facts, and knowing which OS you are running would help us too:):).

Ian, the OS is Monterey 12.2.1, Mail is apple mail Version 15, Imap, and using G-mail and Road Runner as ISP. It still is reacting by sending all (Both) inbox messages to the VIP folder if I delete any message in any other folder. I do not have any address listed as VIP. Right now I cannot locate the VIP Icon to turn the function on or off.

Keep in mind that with IMAP, folders are duplicated on your Mac; not so with PoP. Have you checked Gmail through web access to see if your mail is being directed to the VIP folder? I have no experience with Road Runner so I don't know how they interact with Gmail.

(I use Gmail but only with Apple Mail, no other ISP is involved.)

The incoming mail (MY Roadrunner, & my wife's G-mail) is not being directed to the VIP folder. Mail is going where it is supposed to. If I receive any junk mail, and I click on erase junk mail, then all incoming mail goes to the VIP folder. The inbox messages are gone but appear in the VIP folder. Is there a way to turn off or delete the VIP folder without losing everything?
