Hi, I am experiencing a strange login screen anomaly. On reboot are cold start, there are three entries on my login screen. They are "David" on the left, Guest on the right, and a black figure in the middle with the caption that reads "Update Needed." This happened when I wiped out OS X and reinstalled it. Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of this? Under settings, there are only my user and the guest user listed.

Here is my system information. Let me know if any other information is needed.

Strange... What version of OS X are you running? Is it possible it needs updating? Is the mac running okay once you log on?

FileVault

Hi and thanks for the reply. I was looking elsewhere for the reason this is happening. I has to do with the encrypted filesystem on my Macbook. The installer for OS X Yosemite encrypts the filesystem for privacy and security. I couldn''t find the actual reason for the "update needed" user on the login screen.

In order to get rid of it, I have to turn off File Vault by accessing

system preferences ----> Security & Privacy ----> FileVault.

FileVault must be turned off. Click the lock icon, enter the admin password, and turn off FileVault. The system has to restart and it will tell you it needs to restart. Ounce the desktop has reached, the FileVault will start decrypting the filesystem. This can take a lot of time if you have a lot of files.

Hopefully this will help out someone else.

Unless you are a former KGB spy, or heavily involved in the security business, give FileVault a big miss. Pretty powerful black magic!

Ahhhh! Never thought about encryption. Great tip though. I never use encryption. Too many potential problems for something I don't really need.
