I purchased a new MacBook Pro about 2 months ago. I transferred files from the previous Mac using time machine and an external drive. I have used the transferred user name and password several times to sign in. Today, after rebooting the laptop, the username and password no longer work. I have added several files since the last time machine backup. Is there a way to reset the password without losing the new files?

You didn't mention which version of OS X you have but here are the instructions for resetting the password for Yosemite. They're the same for Mavericks in case you're using that version.

Trust you are not referring to FileVault?

I'd be interested to hear more about your problem - my wife's Air running Yosemite has 'lost' her admin password twice in the last couple of weeks.

Fortunately we had set up our accounts so that our Apple IDs could be used to reset the local password.
