What are you trying to do? If the cables are hooked up and the interfaces are properly configured then you are connected.

I have the eithernet cable hooked up between the two computers with windows sharing turned on on the powerbook. Then I go to the places menu and select connect to server, and from the pull down menu i choose windows server. I type in 192.168.1.101\Ben and click on connect. Then a messege comes up that says The folder contents could not be displayed.

you need a crossover cable if you're trying to connect the 2 computers directly to one another. Elsewise you need to go through a hub/router and plug both computers into it with standard ethernet cable.

Actually, powerbooks don't need crossover cables, a normal ethernet cable will work fine. You can thank apple for that :)

Also, you are trying to connect a mac to linux and you are using windows sharing?? Try sftp...

mscnln is correct. With recent powerbooks a cross over is redundant. While sftp would be a valid choice let's work with SMB since that is our first choice.

1) Which machine is sharing?
2) Can you ping that machine from the other?
3) Are firewalls running on either machine?

Do you know how to ping one machine from the other?
Why are you using windows filesharing when neither box is running windows? SMB Just requires extra setup on both ends. SFTP is probably a better option and since most Linux distro's include SSH/SFTP by default it should already be there. If you don't know how to SFTP from the command line, grab a program like Transmit from Panic. Its got a traditional GUI ftp interface, but also supports SFTP. Assuming netowrking is setup correctly, from the Mac you can SFTP to the linux box using your normal login and password that you use in linux.
