Seriously it depends on how rough it is treated, if you eat or drink over it, is it to be tossed into a back pack which is then kicked around the car or school bus. With care whatever you want to get out of it.

The tasks that a computer also affect it's useful speed / lifespan. This is true no matter what the initial specs are for the machine. Let's take the following example. Two users but the exact same machine/OS combination. One users the computer primarily for e-mail and web surfing. Over time, the other user also begins doing quite a bit of audio/video editing or other intensive tasks.
The second user is going to notice what I call "relative slowdowns" before the first user will. In my mind a relative slowdown is one in which a users perceives a machine as having slowed down when in reality the problem is that the demands placed on the system have increased.

My wife is still using her 2010 MBA and has not indicated that she needs another one, so at least five years ... but as said above, this is VERY VERY dependent on how the user treats it. My wife babies hers as I do my machines.
As for how long they'll be supported -- again I'd say you're looking at about five years of support from Apple, but with the pace of technology that is not a guarantee you won't want another one sooner than that. Light-duty users (email/messaging/facebook/the occasional game) will be able to go longer between new machines that someone who really pushes what it can do.
