Ok my wife's powerbook looks like it might have died. She started it up this morning and it stuck in the Apple screen, we shut it down, and then restarted it. It booted into the login screen, we logged her in and then froze on her desktop during the loading "startup items" phase. So we rebooted, but then this time we only heard the hard drive engange and then nothing. Now it won't even do that.. Does anybody have any troubleshooting ideas?

Tempremental so could be the hard drive or logic board as a rough guess

back up then see if you can run the hardware test on the machine

can you boot off of the restore disks? if you can go into disk utility and check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the disk.

Ill see if I can put a disk in.. since it's just dead, Im not sure the mechanism to insert the DVD into the drive will actually work. Im not sure how I can backup either since I cant boot the thing or even boot into firewire mode.

Ok I tried it and it did the same thing... the screen turned on, the apple appeared, the little rotating graphic below the apple was rotating.. then it stopped rotating and just froze. I held the power button down until it turned off and now it will not turn on again. Is there an internal battery that might have died? reason I ask is that when I let it set for awhile.. it will go as far as I said above, but then after that it's dead and does not do anything.
