You didn't have a virus, there aren't any for OS X. What Sophos removed, if it did, was either a Windows virus in your mail system, or in some file you got from a Windows system in the email. Both are harmless to OS X.

What may have happened is that Sophos "fixed" your keychain. Get rid of Sophos.

As Jake points out a heck of a lot more than dragging to the Trash. If his instructions don't work, then yes install and start all over again. As there are no Mac OS X viruses, no databases and you run Windows databases.

If coming from the Windows background you feel you must have AV software, download and use ClamXAV.
