But!... if you change your login password, the Keychain password does not automatically switch to that new one in some situations, like if another admin user resets your user login password. In these cases, your Keychain will still be using your old login password. The article I linked to explains what to do. I totally misinterpreted this previously. From reading around, it appears that this behavior has slightly changed over time, but you were never able to deliberately set a password for the Keychain that was separate from your user login password.  My bad!
