Over the weekend I had the hard drive replaced in my Mac desktop. Also, it was upgraded to the newest operating software, I believe it's called Maverick. My keyboard is an old small type, and is no longer working. Is it possible that it is no longer compatible with the new software?

Nope. If the keyboard was working fine before…and not working now (and nothing happened to the keyboard. Then there's a high probability the person doing the hard drive replacement/OS upgrade messed something up.
