" message and after researching a bit I tried to zap the PRAM (didn't work) and boot in safe mode (didn't work) and then tried to boot from my #1 install disk (also didn't work).   Fortunately I have the original hard drive in a USB mount (I replaced it with a 7200 rpm drive) which is bootable and after booting with that (everything OK) and running Disk Utility to repair the drive and permissions etc. it's working fine now.</blockquote>
