I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive. This hard drive formerly stayed connected to my G4; however, the main drive on the G4 is failing, so I connected the external hard drive to my MacBook. Whenever I open iTunes now, I get a Kernel Panic immediately. I pasted the log below. What can I do to get access to my library?

Have you tried running repairs in Disk Utility (from your install disc)?
That should be you're first action, and then see if it will allow you access. However, if you're main drive is failing it may not work.
Do that and then report back.

Well, I was desperate for access to my iTunes library - I needed tracks for a lecture I was giving. So, I hooked the external drive up to my (rarely used) PC laptop. I had to update to the newest version of iTunes, but the external hard drive worked fine.

After the lecture, I decided to connect the external to the MacBook again; if it worked on PC, it might work on Mac now, right? It did! I can think of no reason why hooking it up to the PC would help it, but it seemed to.

It worked for a few days. Today, I was purchasing new music, and moving some tracks from iTunes to the iPod. Suddenly got another Kernel Panic. It's back to doing this every time I open iTunes. I ran repair in disk utility from the Snow Leopard Install Disk - didn't help.

The drive was originally used on PC. It ran fine on my G4 for over a year. I can access files from it in the finder with no problem; kernel panics in iTunes seems to be the only problem (but it's a BIG problem). Any thoughts on a fix?

Has there been anything lately that could fall in the the category of " A Suspect Download "
Like have you dl anything from a torrent site or a site that seems a little suspect ??

When you use Disk Utility are you selecting the External HD from the left column and not the Mac HD ?? Just had to ask BC you would be surprised at what some people do :)
As disk utility might be a sound option to have for a clean up, it is not always the best.
Try dl either MainMenu or Oynx and do a system clean. They go more to the root level than Disk utility. I personally prefer MainMenu ....

I haven't downloaded anything from a torrent site. This external is only my iTunes library.

I did select the External, rather than the MacHD.

I'm downloading MainMenu now - we'll see what happens. Thanks!

Ok cool.

Once downloaded check everything you see under configure Batch Tasks EXCEPT Spotlight Reindex and remove .DS_Store Files ... and you should be fine :)

Post back after all is done :)

Try going to .../Music/iTunes and deleting the iTunes Library.itdb, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, and Temp File.tmp. iTunes should start up as if you first got it, with the licence agreement and everything.

TattooedMac - no luck with MainMenu, unfortunately.

Babkockdood - I could not find a file named "iTunes Library.itdb." I do see "iTunes Library.itl" - this isn't what you mean, is it? I didn't think you were supposed to delete that one...

I did delete iTunes Library Extras.itdb and iTunes Library Genius.itdb, the .xml file and the .tmp file. When I start iTunes, I still get the Kernel Panic. However, iTunes is not trying to start up as if I first got it - I can see music from my library, with no hint of a license agreement, when the computer tells me it needs to be restarted.

Correction - TattooedMac:

I missed your second post before. I had nothing checked under the Batch Tasks! I went back and did as you instructed, and I just opened iTunes without a Kernel Panic! Let's hope it stays that way!

Thank you!!!
