The Wikipedia article doesn't say why either. (Wikipedia usually includes those little tidbits ;p)

In any case, I've always wondered why it was called as such.

I mean, it's not exactly obvious that QuickTime = movie/audio playing

I thought it was based on a dancing term.

Dancing, eh?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_country_dance

Hmm, why would they choose a name related to Scottish country dancing though?
What does that have to do with multimedia? ;p ;p

Usually, it's usually pretty easy to figure out why Apple's stuff are named the way they are.
e.g., Finder, iTunes, Preview, GarageBand, all the iApps, etc.
QuickTime is one of the only exceptions.

I have no idea if it's even remotely true, but according to this site http://www.mackido.com/History/History_VfW.html

"The name QuickTime comes from Apple's name for its API's QuickDraw (which is the Mac's and Lisa's Imaging engine) and the Time factor associated with video and sound."

That's the best my googling got. Wow, insomnia sucks :)

I think it's because video and audio are both TIME based, they must be in sync. And when the technology came out, it was QUICK, able to sync both tracks in TIME.
