If I read correctly, the songs aren't even on the HD but scattered on DVDs. When iTunes asks you if you want to keep playlists and the such it may have a XML list of what you had on the iPod in the backup file, but it will always go back to iTunes, get the songs and copy them to the iPod. If the songs aren't in the iTunes Library where will it get them from? Because it does not back them up in the actual iPod backup file, which would be HUUUGE if it did.I have my entire music, and iTunes library on a 500GB external HD. Now, I also have that music imported into iTunes and sorted into playlists in iTunes.If my iPod bites the dust, and I restore it from a backup it will have all the playlists i had on the iPod checked under the iPod Name&gt;Music tab. Once I hit sync, they get pushed onto the iPod. Same if I loose my iPod, I still have the playlists setup in iTunes and can push them to a new device.</blockquote>
