I went to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ and saw the backup, it is 6.42GB , but l can't see any of the media, only strangely named folders and files, eg in "Backup" folder there are folders called: ac679dcab665d4f38d4470943e793c38d6cd31b4" for eg, and in these folders are files called "0d0948cfc643ac18d14559f3524d05b6d9dae8c" for eg , so where are all the pics so l can free up some space in my internal HDD by putting in external drive. There is now only 1.93GB available in 250GB capacity, does this mean my internet and computer performance is slowed down?

The backups are stored in a way that is intelligible to iTunes (which ultimately manages these) and iOS - they aren't meant to be user readable.

Yes, that'll slow down performance of your Mac (significantly so). You'll want to try and keep at least 10-15% disk space free.
