itunes 10.5 issue driving me crazy!!

I have tried and successfully downloaded itunes 10.5 but I can not get it to install. I have restarted my mac after the install but I still have 10.2 I get the white square icon that says itunes 10.5 if i click on it it takes me back to the itunes installer where it shows install itunes icon and read before install icon. Is there something i'm doing wrong? I have safari 5.1.1 osx 10.6.8 and I have plenty of space available. Please help this is making me crazy!!

Also if I check the software update it says all software is latest update
