Let's qualify these statements. A person who has not tried OS X on Intel (other than the development platform) says there is nothing preventing it from being installed on standard PC equipment with compatible components. He feels it is just a matter of time before the Software becomes available on the warez sites and torrents. Both of these statements are almost definitely true.

Another (anonymous) person says it is already out on the warez sites.

This does not add up to that OS X will run on any PC. Further /. partrons are saying it is not out on any of the likely locations yet. I have stated my opinion on SW piracy so I won't bore you with repeating it. Suffice it to say I have not checked.

It is just a mtter of time before it is leaked (if it is not already) but I think it more likley that it will run on a relatively small subset of x86 machines. I could be wrong on this but I don't see Apple developing drivers for the cornecopia of x86 chipsets and video cards out there and packaging it into the development release. I was wrong about Apple staying with PPC after all.

I will wait for more credible feedback or at least multiple sources before I put away the salt.

The most important thing to remember is, this is the development version. The development "Intel Macs" that Apple has shipped are, according to reports, nothing but a standard Intel PC motherboard in a G5 case. The OS on these systems (which supposedly has been leaked) is just a cross-compiled version of Tiger.

Apple's goal is to get these out quickly so developers can port software. This developer version doesn't appear to have any anti-piracy features at all. I agree with the article that it could be pirated and installed on anything at all...but I doubt very much that the release version will bear any resemblance to this version.

Similarly, the developer hardware reportedly has a standard PC BIOS, but Apple engineers have also stated that even they don't know what firmware the final Intel-based Mac systems will have. This could make a huge difference in compatibility.

I told you it would come no less then a month after the forst one is available. That just sucks that a developer did it.

Ill bet big money that happle has something encoded in each copy on each developer machine, and could quickly trace any leak.....

either that, or they knew it would be leaked, and since it will run on such a narrow range of systems because of the probable lack of drivers, they dont really care.

it boils down to this, either they are gonna know who did it (if its even true) and nail em HARD, or they dont care

Why do people keep saying that this will "Be good for Apple"???

I don't see it as being anything but bad. The last thing we need is PC's running OS X.

It is possible that both are true.

It's called viral marketing.. hmm.. wait I think someone else mentioned that.. anyways Im sure it's on purpose.. it'll give people a taste of OS X and then when Apple actually releases MacTel boxes then those that had the taste might just switch :)

Is it possible that the developers version of the OS may have a time out feature?

I find it somewhat doubtful. I think the ramifications of Apple intentionally releasing their copyrighted product would prevent them from doing so, even on the sly. The potential loss on implied distribution would prevent it.

I think this excuse is used a little too much to make people feel better about copying it. It is almost becoming a meme.

A couple thousand developers have had access to this, inside and outside Apple. It only takes one to distribute it.
