So I am having a bit of a strange issue with an older Macbook a1278 that I cannot figure out. When booting, it boots very slow, sometimes it goes to progress wheel but usually the dot circle just spins indefinitely. One time it did boot all the way to desktop, but as soon as I clicked Apple logo, it froze up to color wheel. So I've tried the NVRAM reset, Safe boot (does not work) and using target mode to clear up some space.

Here's where it got strange.. So in target mode I was able to clone the drive onto another external drive using my good Macbook. I tested the drive externally with Option - boot, and it worked. So I swapped the drive, and received the Question mark folder on boot.

Then I used the old drive which I thought was bad with Option - boot in the external rig, and it booted just fine. So I replaced the old drive into the macbook. Back to the same problem.

SO could this issue be caused by maybe a faulty hard disk cable? Or a controller on the motherboard? If anything I can remove the drive and use it externally to change settings if needed.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Welcome to our forums.

It could be a SATA cable since your machine is pretty old. Replace it and run the test again. Also keep an eye on that hard drive - make sure you have a backup.
