I would say no as well. I don't see the P20-S203 on Toshiba's website, so I'll use their top of the line laptop. First of all, don't even start comparing processor speeds. The 1 GHz G4 processor is extremely capable...maybe moreso in some tasks than the P4 2.8 GHz. The standard RAM is the same. I'm not sure if you can upgrade the Toshiba's RAM, but the 17" pb is upgradable to 1 GB of RAM. Forget hardware for a moment....The operating system is where Apple computers truly shine. I suggest finding a Mac somewhere that you can play with just to see how you like the OS and such. I guarantee you will see the advantages over Windows immediately! Happy hunting....

The level of both machines is probably such that any performance difference between them would be either negligible or irrelevant. Deciding between the two will basically depend on personal preference rather than objective specs.

You also need to remember that you're asking for the opinions of Mac users here, many of whom (myself included) are extremely enthusiastic and loyal to the entire Apple concept. I know that I personally wouldn't trade my new 14" iBook for the Toshiba (unless of course I could sell the Toshiba afterwards and get another Mac ) I'm sure the overall power of the Toshiba is higher, and I still own an older Satellite that serves me well, but my Mac offers so much more than what's implied by the numbers.

I've actually used one of those 17" Toshiba's, and the displays are terrible. Not as crisp as an Apple display, and they don't even look like they are the right dimensions. Kinda weird.

Do you want an x86 or a PPC? Windows, or Mac?

Or do you just plan on installing Linux, making it a pure question of raw power?
