Is there any way to check for bad sectors on OS X? Something like scandisk on Windows? I just dropped my iBook this morning and to my horror it has problem booting up. I wonder if it's the HDD is causing the problem.

Any advise?

when booting up the computer hold down the Apple key and S

when the unix terminal is done loading (you will be able to tell) type this in

/sbin/fsck -f
hit enter
thats the closest to a sector scanner in OS X
When it is done if it found errors do the scan again if not type in
Reboot hit enter (it might be restart i always forget) and it will boot up

I believe you mean the Apple key and the S key. Which will put you into single user mode with one GUI.

According to this Apple + S boots to CLI, not GUI.. Anyway that's the combination you are looking for. If it boots to single user mode, then run /sbin/fsck -f as trpnmonkey41 said.

For rebooting from CLI:
"reboot"
or
"shutdown -r now"

For shutting down:
"shutdown -h now"

Yep I am just so used to telling people to hold down C when they are booting to install from CD that it just came out when I was typing in Apple key and S Key
