I am using Snow Leopard and Safari 5.1.10. So far I only know of how to momentarily pause gifs by pressing the ESC key, but you have to keep your finger on it the entire time or the gif will keep playing. Is there any way at all to completely disable gifs, period, so that they don't play when you open a page? If so, please explain how to do this in terms a four-year-old would understand. Thank you!

Install the extensions Adblock, Flashblock and Ghostery. This will stop all advertisement, flash videos and animated gifs and all that. You won't even see any of the ads on the screen. For Flash video, you will get a clear indicator allow you to play only the ones you care about..
