Is my ipod gone forever?

So I just finished listening to my favorite song on my 1st generation ipod touch and then goodbye, I got the black screen with the white apple. Then when I press the "on" button, I get the black screen with the white apple for about 10 seconds then it's goodbye again and itunes is not recognizing it. What happened? I got it in august 2008, it's not like it gave a warning or anything. It was working perfectly

what should I do?
