Is it dying?

I have a G4 power tower with a 1.0 Ghz clock. At present it won't make the chime noise when turned on. The light goes on but the screen stays dark.
I have everything backed up, but is it dying? Or dead? Is the system just too
slow for the newer apps?

Would appreciate any help.

First, I would check the PRAM battery. So PowerMac G4's won't boot if that is dying/dead.

If you are asking about newer apps on the G4, well all new Apps only run on Intel CPU's and that is an old Power PC. Nothing newer than 10.5 Leopard will run either.

And Leopard will not be that fast with a 1GHz processor alas. After popping in the new battery try setting the PRAM, boot and immediately hold down Command, Option P and R keys all at the same time until you hear the third chime.
