The very bottom line of my signature has a link to download it, the one that says "Get HandBrake 0.8.5 Beta 1". The other 2 lines are links to tutorials on how to rip movies with it.

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 converter, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows

For information you can go to the HandBrake Website. I am also a Mod in the forums there.

nothing comes up when i click on the link

It's not supposed to, it downloads the disc image to your Mac.

Look for a file called "HandBrake-0-1-8.5b1-MacOS_UB.dmg" on your desktop, or wherever your browser downloads files to (My Documents is the default IIRC).

what exactly does isquint do? i just want to put dvds directly onto my ipod.

isquint converts .wmv/.avi etc into mp4 so it can be played on the video ipod.

Handbrake is for converting DVDs to watch on your iPod, Mac or Apple TV. iSquint is for convert other video formats (AVI, MPG, MPEG-2 and so on) to the correct format for the iPod.

Bottom line, use HandBrake to convert DVDs fro your iPod, use iSquint for everything else.

No, I'm confusing you.

If it's only DVDs, you'll just need handbrake.

Ok, first off let me thank you guys for all of this information on this post it has been EXTREMELY helpful. now here is my question...
when i use isquint it creates a whole movie in mp4 for me to view on my video ipod at about 250mb (GREAT) but when i use handbrake the files are well over 1GB! i only have a 30 GB ipod and plan on putting a couple of movies on it! is there any way to make these files smaller? ive tried to use the target size option but the video becomes choppy...

thanks for the help in advance.

To be honest, 250mb for a whole movie is really at the ragged edge of quality - although I understand that's just preference. Mine usually come out between 1 - 2 gb and look great.

The way I deal with it is just to use Itunes to choose what to carry on the Ipod - I have probably 300gb of stuff on Itunes, so I just choose the films I want to carry via the Ipod options. Even with 30gb you can carry 10 films, 20 episodes of TV shows (create a video playlist for TV shows), and several thousand music tracks.

I definitely go for quality over quantity, and considering it'd take at least a week to get bored with what you're carrying anyway it's not a lot of work.

Yes. Follow the instructions linked from my signature and bring the bite rate down to say 750 or lower. Also, make sure the video size is at least 320 by XXX and leave the audio at the default. You can further reduce the size by using MPEG-4 vice MP4/H.264, but your quality will suffer greatly. It may still look good on the iPods screen, but don't watch it on your computer or TV, it will suck.
