Not me, because for some it will be a must have ... As you say it "gizmo"

This will be around for a long time to come, and as technology gets better and smaller, i would look out for the additions to it over the years.

I don't think it's a fade, But at the same time I don't think it's excitement about the release is the same as when a new iPhone is announced.

I just pre-ordered the 32GB WiFi iPad, now here are my reasons:

1. I sold my Kindle DX on ebay for $395 (I really liked it for reading on the treadmill)
2. instead of taking my MBP with me on work trips, I can do everything with the iPad
3. iPad will be easier to watch movies in the plane if person in front of me reclines
4. taking work laptop and MBP was too heavy, this will lighten my load

I love Apple everything, so it wasn't too hard of a sell for me. Selling the Kindle was what made me actually made me do it.

I can't wait til 4/3!

In your situation it makes sense, traveler/business person who has a real use for the iPad. Don't get me wrong as far as e-readers go I think the iPad is a step ahead and I would be willing to bet that a lot of people will be selling their Kindles and various types of other e-readers on ebay.

The market for them is going to be drastically reduced. Wish I had sold our Kindle already.

Yes...unfortunately as soon as I saw the iPad announcement back in January...my first thought was..."Anyone with a Kindle better sell it ASAP!"

Apple even gave Kindle owners 60-90 days to sell them before the iPad hit the streets.;)

The Kindle is/was a fine device until the iPad was announced...but now its price-point is too high to be competitive. If the price of a Kindle was reduced to maybe $100...then they may survive.

Yep, and I paid $100 premium when I bought the one we have now during that time when Amazon couldn't keep up with demand during the Christmas season a couple years ago.

And just to add:

There do not exist any "must have" gizmo's.

I have friend's that do not have a TV or radio in their homes. I know many more that do not now, nor have they ever owned a computer and see absolutely no reason to have one. Add a great many more to that number that do not now, nor have ever owned a pda, mobile phone or mp3 player of any type.

Think we had enough of them in the first week after it's announcement.

I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Extra threads are a 'must have', even if they prove to be just a fad :D

The iPad tablet form factor will replace the notebook in 5 to 7 years.

Please keep this info on the QT as long as possible. I have spent a great deal of time/energy trying to convince my wife that these objects are necessary. lol

I promise not to say it aloud. My wife is sitting right over there on the couch and I've already ordered my 64 GB iPad.

It may be a fad, but I've already purchased the X-Men, Spiderman and Ironman Comic book DvD sets in anticipation of my 64gb 3g model. ;D Was originally going to have the 32bg version, but the wife didn't want to wait so we ended up ordering two.

I dont think its a fad, but its not the second coming of christ either. People have previously shown they aren't interested in tablets so the only redeeming feature this time is the app store. it's success, if it has any, will be due to the app store.

Its said to fill the gap between the smartphone and the laptop. I'm not sure there is a gap that needs filling there though. Steve jobs called it the third device, to me it's more of a fifth wheel.

My personal question is I wonder how the ipad will affect future ipod touch sales. As really if they are roughly the same price as each other I can't see many people going for the touch. I know I would not buy a touch if the ipad was only a few $ more.
