I have an iPad Mini 4 which has been very useful on my travels however of late it's been getting quite hot in use and the battery runs out of charge after around an hour. So, I know a battery replacement (£65 here in the UK) is on the cards. BUT, the screen also becomes very unresponsive to touch. Could this related to the battery issue, which a replacement would solve, or should I put a new iPad on my Christmas present list?

Without going into all the details my advice is if you can afford it go for a new one. The new iPad Mini has the A17 Pro chip and will run Apple Intelligence based software which you may think you don't need today but I suspect as new OS and AI features are released it will become more and more desirable, not to mention simply staying compatible with current app resource requirements, eg. getting hot..

Someone ran into my wife's car this evening so a new iPad, or new anything for that matter, is out of the question for a while. I should have added that I have not added any new apps to this particular iPad for a couple of years, it's only just lately that it has become exceedingly hot. This is very much a 'second' iPad rather than my main one so it's not important for it to have all or any new bells and whistles! :)

Thanks Bob. Done that. I really was just keen to know whether the non-responsive screen was associated with the battery or likely to be a separate unrelated issue so i can make an informed decision.

It might be. If the battery is pushing on the back of the display/touch screen, it could distort the ability to sense touch. But there is no way to know except to change the battery, so there's that.

Thanks all. Will take it to a recommend battery replacement specialist and see what they say., both problems started simultaneously and take their advice. As you say Rod, hopefully a new battery will be the way to go. Meanwhile it looks like our little run-around is going to be written off - deep scrape on door and actual 3" dia hole, dents and deep scrapes in back panel.
