Woke up today with my phone having a security update. As it says above it is for 16.4.1(a). That is my first "a" update designation! Anyway it is a fast small update. It took a couple of minutes at most. There is also one for ipad too.

Apple calls it a rapid response update and evidently you can opt out.

Yes. Did mine yesterday on all our iDevices. Takes a very short time - 3 minutes or so.

I got my first iMac in 2008, and since then, I can't recall a "Rapid Security Response" in all that time.

Given the title of the update - strange that an opt out is offered. I can't say I notice such, but then again, I just got stuck in and downloaded the lot.

I got notifications for the update yesterday evening. The update was fine on my M1 MBP but initially I had popups on my iPhone and iPad stating that I'm not connected to the internet and "Unable to Verify Security Response". I clearly was connected and there were options to retry or be reminded later. I tried retries on both devices over several minutes but got nowhere. However a few hours later the update succeeded on both devices. Maybe some kind of server error? Anyone know?

Well if it works as advertised and they can release known vulnerabilities which then take a short time to install - that beats the heck out of waiting for the next big update. Plus the added advantage of not having the potential for bad things to happen.

Probably Apple servers maxed out.
