Hello Mac-Forum members! I've been working on this problem for several days now and I've finally decided to break down and ask for some help. I'm hoping that some of you fine people can lend me a hand. Here's the situation:

I am attempting a repair of a Macbook Air for a friend of mine. The Macbook originally came with OS X Lion 10.7.5. The unit was wiped at some point and the only option for recovery is internet. The user made several failed attempts and was advised that it was most likely a SSD issue and replaced the SSD. User was still unable to perform an internet recovery and thus, I have said Macbook.

Now for the symptoms. On boot there is a white screen with a flashing folder and question mark (missing OS), no huge surprise since it is a brand new SSD. Holding down the Option button, or the Control + Command + R buttons bring up a selection screen for wifi network and after the credentials are entered the internet recovery begins. The status bar begins to fill and the timer starts, usually stating there is 5 minutes or so remaining. After the status bar fills and the timer counts down the screen goes white, the apple logo appears and then the spinning icon appears at the bottom. This screen stays for a few moments then there is a grey, fabric-textured screen that has no content and about 10 seconds later the unit power cycles on its own. On reboot the flashing folder with the question mark is back and the cycle continues. I have run the Apple Hardware Test several times and no problems are reported. I have spent hours and hours googling this problem and trying numerous solutions with no results.

Do any of you fine people have suggestions? I'm about to be the proud owner of a very shiny shotgun target...... Thank you all in advance.

When you are talking about Internet Recovery, what operating system are you attempting to put on the MBA? Do you, or the owner, have an Apple ID in order to access the App Store? What you are describing is typical of no operating system.

If your friend purchased it new, they may have the OS X.7 Lion install thumb drive. Lion on a DVD can be purchased from Apple Store and used with Apple's external opitical drive, or try any external drive and see if it will boot. Lion was also sold on a USB thumb drive. If you have another Mac make a thumb drive from the DVD if necessary. You say you have run Apple Hardware Test from what source?

When the DVD/thumb drive boots by holding down 'C' on restart and after the chime, leave Installer, go to Utilities and erase the drive, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Ensure under Partition > Options GUID is selected.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply!

I'm actually trying to get whatever OS I can get to go back on there. The problem is, I never get any options at all. I do have an apple ID, but not that was ever used in conjunction with this device.

Unfortunately they owner has no installation media. This unit was actually inherited when the owner's brother passed away from cancer. I guess the Lion DVD or thumb drive may be my best option at this point, though I'm still completely baffled by the fact that internet recovery doesn't show any options at all. I did run the apple hardware test by holding down the "D" key during boot up. I get the wifi network prompt and when I enter the correct password, it says "starting internet recovery" with the spinning globe but then switches to a blue screen with the language selection for AHT. After the language is selected I can chose between "about" "hardware tests" and "hardware profile" tabs.

When the DVD/thumb drive boots by holding down 'C' on restart and after the chime, leave Installer, go to Utilities and erase the drive, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Ensure under Partition > Options GUID is selected.

I will definitely give this a shot. I hate the fact that I'm going to have to buy installation media, but it's better than having a big silver Frisbee.

Well it's only 20 bucks and if it works that is a cheap remedy ~ apart from the carton of beer you may like to mail to Australia. You say it was wiped at some stage. That no doubt has removed the Reovery Partition which is set up when the system software is installed.

PS. Keep the Moderators hands' of the beer!!!
