Intel to delay my switch?

I've been planning to buy an Apple later this year, but since the keynote, I was wondering wheter I should wait for the new Intel boxes or should I go with a PowerPC? After all, it will take time for intel boxes to establish and become the standard, and til then we'll have universal Binaries... I don't think my PowerPC Mac would become obsolete totally (or comparable to what G3's are to today) until Late-2007 .

Besides, I don't believe the first Intel machines will be that reliable as yet, really...

Or is anyone there who'd correct me on these ponderings?

I would agree with your logic for sure.... I am planning to pick up a new Powermac right before the switch so that it can tide me over until all the bugs are worked out.

Yeah..I'm in the same situation as you. I already saved around $1000 for an ibook 14" that I was planning on getting this Christmas, but ever since WWDC, I've decided to hold back. But while I'm waiting, I'm gonna continue to save and hopefully get a powerbook instead.

One thing remains constant about the future - it remains unknowable

The whole Intel / Apple thing could like a wet paper bag etc.

Personally when I worked at Intel I hoped such a deal would be made (of course I was an Intel stock holder then - options etc) but beyond that I believed that an Apple / Intel alliance would work to temper Microsofts influence in the market place ---- and still hope so.

But back on topic - I see no real advantage to waiting to buy - it looks like Apple made it very clear that its developed tools for developers to easily support dual binaries etc. ------ so is all goes well the current PPC platforms should see a gentle exit into history as the the new Intel platforms come to dominate.

I came to Mac to escape the lunacy of XPeee - I ain't going back man - I'm a happy switcher

I would certainly not wait to buy. I will be buying a desktop later this year myself. Right now I have a new powerbook and it is all I need. However, I believe Jan of 2006 is when I'll sport the desktop. I am not waiting for Intel. I am going to do what the guy above my post said...Get one as late as possible (which also happens to be when I was ready to buy) and then let it tide me over while the whole switch works out the bugs...because believe me...there will be bugs. Apple is doing remarkable things working with developers and such to make sure this won't happen, but there will always be one thing that they did not get their hands around and ultimately I will buy a Rev B of something intel and let the Rev A'ers work stuff out.
However, I that all just fits in my buying plan. Had I been new and gung ** I would not wait for Intel either.

Take this from someone who just switched, DON'T WAIT!!!

You will enjoy it so much!! Although, I would recommend the Powerbook. I love mine!! You can't beat that extra power!

Have fun!!

I've been waiting for the past 2 years guys. I am soooo happy I finally made the switch a month ago. Intel or no Intel, go get it now. In two years when the intel machines would be bug-free you would need an upgrade anyway.

I don't know what to do about upgrading. I switched to Mac with a Mini, and I know it's not going to suffice until all the bugs are worked out. Who knows, maybe it will.

I'm planning to stick it out with an old sawtooth and a G3 powerbook. So I hope that your mini can tide you over... otherwise I'm ______ed. If your not a poweruser you'll probably be fine. Unless of course apple releases something drool-worthy and 'cheap as mini' afordable in the mean-time.

Tiger is becoming more and more 'drool-worthy' to me. But so far so good. Since I've had the Mini, there hasn't been anything I couldn't do with it. I imagine I should be good to go. I will probaby up the ram, and maybe a faster HDD before the year is out. And this just in . . . . the SuperDrive I ordered just arrived minutes ago! :mac:

Yeah I guess I'll buy one, the big developers are sure to release universal binaries for a long time even after the switch is hypothetically "complete", and I don't have any performance grudges, as I think this whole switch is menat primarily for faster Powerbooks. And since I'll start College in late 2007, I'll grab whatever awesome Intel Laptop Apple sports then :p .

But right now, I need a powerful home studio where I can hook up my guitar and use logic.

Well, if you can afford it :p .

Still I doubt there will be any changes in the whole apple experience, I also feel that the intel chip will be a new one, not a pentium or so... One just for apple, hence no hacks, malware etc.
By software, we won't see anything new.
Speed, not much in the beginning, well not if the first machines are at 3.6 GHz .
By next year intel should've reached 5GHz according to moore's law....

Get it now :) it will last for years, the next OSX 5 will run on PPC probably OSX 6 & OSX 7 too, the 3rd party software is available for PPC Macs. Some will take a while to be ported to Intel Macs.
PPC Macs will be sold till 2007, add 3 years AppleCare = 2010 then for as long you want them too.
Spending time here helping a new switcher, brand new Mac last week and Yes she knew about the intel change over.

I wen't ahead and took the plunge....about 40 minutes ago. I decided to go with a refurb 12" 1.5 Powerbook figuring that it will do me for a couple of years or so and take me through the bug stages, rather than putting off my planned switch and being the lab rat for the new machines.

So...my order is in the system...I can't wait to be in the cult.
