Installing apps that are not from the Mac App Store

I am trying to update my HP All-in-One printer software on my Macbook Pro and get this message: Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers." I went to My Preferences but didn't see where I could change this security feature. I downloaded the software from the HP site. Would appreciate any help you can give me.

Seems you are running up against Gatekeeper, Apple's seurity network. Right click on the download and allow that way.
