So I'm not sure if this is possible, but I suppose that's why I'm here :)

I've got a retail DMG of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 that I want to install on my older mac. Can someone explain to me how I can accomplish this?

As of now, when I start up the A1226, I get the question mark folder and that's it. My other, functional, mac is a 2009 A1286 w/ Yosemite 10.10.5, if that matters.

Let me know if you need any additional details! Thanks.

What is a retail DMG of Snow Leopard 10.6.3? The original version of OS X that came factory installed on the A1226 MacBook Pro was Tiger 10.4.9. If you have a retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 disk it should install by booting from the disk and following installation instructions.

Too many devices to list
Snow Leopard never came as a DMG. Where did you get it from?

Short version: spend the $20 and get a real, not pirated, Snow Leopard DVD from Apple. That will work.

An illegal downloaded copy or someone elses? Won't work. Do as chas_m suggests and lash out the $20. Apple Online.

So do I need to get Tiger 10.4.9 DVD or will a 10.6.8 Snow Leopard DVD work as well? My A1226 is Intel based....

When you get the SL DVD, pop it in and reboot. Immediately hold down 'C', leave the Installer and go to Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Disk from there and make sure the hard drive is okay as sometimes that question mark folder can signal hard drive problems. If all is well back to installer and run. When finished update to version OS X.6.8 using the combo updater. After that you can access the App Store and after tomorrow you can update to El Capitan! if you wish.

Thanks Harry. Now, question, before ordering the DVD... I've tried holding down the C key, but the computer stays at the question mark screen. Is this just because there is not yet a DVD in the drive? Or is my harddrive messed up? I don't understand why it would be because I was able to put in Target Mode, get at the files I wanted to keep, then I did a 1 pass wipe on the computer. Let me know your thoughts, thanks :)

Yes. Get the DVD, pop it in, reboot and then hold down'C' immediately to boot from the DVD and proceed.

Alright, so this is what I did. I booted the old mac in slave mode first, repaired the disc (it didn't specify any issues). Then, powered down, and started up with Snow Leopard disc inserted and holding C. It worked! But... after installation, the computer restarted and the screen is not working :S

So I'm not sure what is wrong, I am somewhat convinced there is a loose display cable internally, but I figured I'd post here and see if anyone has any ideas before I got disassembling it.

I believe it may be a loose wire mainly because the screen working/not working is intermittent and doesn't seem to be for any rhyme or reason.

Thanks for any help!

I know that you have another thread discussing this video problem. The important questions (to me) are:

- Has this computer been your's for a while…or did you purchase it used recently?
- If "new to you"…has the computer (video) ever worked properly?

As suggested in the other thread. Try an external monitor.
