Inherited an old mac - how to make it mine?

Hi Guys, I have an old macbook pro (2009). The problem is I want to format it and set up my own account, how do I do this? I can get in and use it but don't know the password (my sister and her ex husband shared it and she won't speak to him).

How you do this will depend a bit on which version of the OS is installed. Also do you have any of the DVDs that came with it or a Snow Leopard DVD?

You might want to also visit Every Mac and give us some idea of the exact model & specs of your laptop - hardware upgrades may be helpful for better function w/ a newer OS X. Dave :)
