importing and retaining the file formats in iphoto

when I download my photos from my Canon camera into iphoto - the file extensions (.jpg .CR2 etc.) show before I download, but do not show when in the iphoto library -- I am particularly interested in the raw vs jpg formats, as they are only displayed as duplicate files of the same number and I have to go to info to find which is which - any suggestions ??
