I have a thumb drive full of images plugged into a usb port but can't find any evidence of it. Where can I look? An hour ago I saw tiny thumbnails of some of the pictures, but now can't find anything.

From the Finder menu open Finder Preferences. In the General tab make sure external disks is checked. Now insert the thumb drive and open it.

The OP said he saw the images on the USB drive previously. Why would this setting suddenly have changed?

I missed that detail earlier when reading the post. Normally that setting wouldn't change without user intervention.

Well, the OP hasn't returned, so maybe he figured it out. I was going to suggest DU to see if the drive could be mounted from there.
