iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) macOS 10.14, 3.8 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB RAM
My iMac hard drive volume icon is displayed on my desktop. Occasionally it changes the name all by itself. It's name used to be "4" and now I see its name is now "0". What causes this? I know I can go in and rename the volume icon, but eventually the name will change. Thank you in advance.

I guess you have read what Apple says here:
Rename files, folders, and disks on Mac
You can change the name of most files, folders, and disks, including the internal hard disk (named Macintosh HD by default). If you change the name of your hard disk, it still appears with its original name on a network.

To change the name yourself I would try looking at some of these hits:

And maybe try including its new name in your network setup as well.

That's sort of a strange happening as far as I'm concerned. And it doesn't seem very normal to me.

Strange and abnormal indeed! Macs (or any other brand) just don't do things the user has not set up. The name change must be triggered by something that someone did, however unknowingly. But as for what that might have been, you might never be able to determine.

Good find, Patrick! Still, "on it's own" is not really accurate. From the synopsis above, it appears what could happen is that the user takes an action that creates a conflict in Sharing Services. Modified theory: For any action, potentially, there is a baffling reaction.
