I was typing at Gmail in Safari. I closed Safari, walked away to answer the telephone, and when I came back the screen was DARK — so dark I could barely see the screen at all.

On my MacAir I googled “iMac screen gone dark” which opened a page that instructed me to click on Apple menu>System Settings>Display>Brightness. It wasn't easy on so dark a screen, but that fixed it.

But — the Brightness setting was as far to the left as it could go. I didn't do that. The Apple memo was not open. What could have caused the display to change radically? Was it something I said?

It’s on a need-to-know basis which is only known to Apple:ROFLMAO:

No idea why!

I'll agree with and also suggest it was no doubt the cat.

There's a good chance it just sat on the F1 keyboard key, and if it happens again, you should be able to press the F2 keyboard key several times to bring it back to its normal level.

Now I can get this sent off now that our internet is back up and working I guess they had power failure or outage somewhere locally. It's amazing how much gets affected in our home as theISP's connection provide service for our internet, digital land telephone and TV signal. At least we didn't lose our Hydro power.

Fluffy,
Great to see you. And, yes, as you know, you're gorgeous!
As for our humans, they're great pets, but not too bright.

Same thing just happened to me with my iMac from late 2015! So happy I found your memo. Thank you! Did this ever happen to you since that one time?

No ... not yet.

Glad the fix was here for you.
Fortunately for us all, these posts seem to remain in place ad infinitum.

As you are discovering ("new member"), this is a great website. My experience has been, look here first. If the answer isn't already here, these teachers will create one.
