Welcome to our forums.

You're receiving kernal panics. Probably caused by: 1. Avira 2. Soundflower 3. Apogee

Unload those three drivers and completely remove|uninstall Avira as it's not needed anyway. There are no viruses in the wild that can infect your iMac. There is malware which Avira will not find anyway. If you need to run some kind of anti malware program, we suggest the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software.

As Administrator chscag says you are throttling the poor thing with all that unnecessary crap, to put a word on it. Running these you mkust be from the Windows background. Clean them out and download and run Malwarebytes for Mac in the Scan mode.

Keep us posted?

Holy cow! this is very helpful!!!! I'm really happy someone actually looked at this as I know it's totally unsolicited. but the computer has been getting worse and worse! i'll be turning these apps off to see how things improve.. much appreciated. hard drive sounds funny too, perhaps something up with it.

Rule one of computers. Upgrading the operating system in itself does nothing to fix problems and may in fact compound them.

Do you by chance have the original OS X.6 Snow Leopard DVD that may have come with your iMac? During these upgrades, have you ever erase and formatted the hard drive and done a clean install? Have you ever booted into Recovery Mode and ran Disk First Aid over the hard drive?

I suggest your best solution is to use that Snow Leopard DVD, or purchasing one from Apple Online for $20.00, booting from it, erasing the hard drive and format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and do a clean install and then upgrading from there all over again. You dod have everything on a current backup on an externa;l hard drive?

i do actually. I also have a hard drive i believe. this used to happen once or twice a day - annoying but not a huge deal. suddenly it's every 30 seconds- unusable now.. hopefully i can figure this out with that disk and maybe a new drive.

I must admit I was thinking the same thing, but was also going to suggest doing a cold boot using Safe Boot Mode and see if thing improve at all.

And then at least run Disk Utility to Verify the Boot drive volume and Repair Permissions.

This thread has been very helpful. I'd forgotten that I'd retained the old HD until someone asked.

In any regards, i turned it off for a day. came back this morning and it booted successfully to desktop. ran malwarebytes which discovered several issues and fixed successfully. then uninstalled Apogee Duet (old audio interface that in my opinion seems to have been the root cause of all the years of crashes based on my googlefu). From there i restarted in disk utility and was able to repair the disk successfully.

it seems stable for now, which is great but i have a feeling the hard drive could be on the way out (reason being that i could get it to work after a 12 hour chill). I'm going to back it up and see if i encounter any other issues. i have a feeling i'm not out the woods entirely.

Get rid of Avira before doing the backup. This is not Windows and there are no OS X viruses.

If you were running Apogee to aid JRE (Java Runtime Environment) suggest the same course as it is now finished.

close - it's http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/duet an older version of a firewire device that isn't supported anymore.
i'm backing everything up to do a clean re-install and if that doesn't work, i'll move onto dealing with the memory and storage (SSD drive sounds nice anyway).

searching around this website, i've heard that bad ram can cause these issues. i'm not technical and I don't remember what I put in this thing, as it was years ago, but it's worth looking at i suppose.

Just a note that it seems that Apogee Maestro 2 (Duet FW Model) "works fine" for El Capitan users that you seem to be using:

http://roaringapps.com/app/apogee-maestro-2-duet-fw-model

IF that's the software involved.

Honestly I suspected it to be root cause from day one but back then the crashes were infrequent 1x daily. . Which is obviously unacceptable but I didn't do anything about it due to being busy etc... It's Uninstalled, I still have crashes. Not sure so eliminating all points of failure, . Clean refresh of OS and backing up my pics and music. Hope it's not a hardware issue but okay if so. I don't want to spend money needlessly.
