I think my power supply is going out. Bought a used one but on my old one cn103 jack is a single pin with single wire connecting it. On the new "used" supply cn103 has 2 pins. The wire has a end the will slid over but Witch pin do I use or did I get the wrong supply.

...did I get the wrong supply.

Can't say exactly. There were at least 6 different "Late 2009" iMac's. Need to know the exact Late 2009 model iMac you have.

Thanks for the model info and additional details. Is it a green wire with a ring terminal on it that looks something like this:

24C719_AW01

If so...probably a ground wire.

No it's black with a small crimp on connector that will push on to a pin. I can take pictures but do not see how to post them.

I was just reviewing the specs mentioned earlier. If you were shopping for "Late 2009" parts/power supply...you're only 2 years off!;)

What you have is a August, 2007 iMac. This could explain the differences.:)

I also checked compatibility info. And power supplies for August, 2007 24" iMac's are not interchangeable with "Late 2009" iMac's.

I think my power supply is going out.

Just curious, but how does one know or what are the symptoms if an iMac power supply is actually failing???

I would say not quite as easy as in older desktop Mac Pro models...where there are more parts that can be upgraded (PCI expansion cards, lots of RAM, extra hard drives)...all of which can put extra demand on the power supply.

In an iMac that's not very upgradeable. Signs I can think of that could indicate a weak or failing power supply could be:

- Intermittent cold startup's (versus sleep). Maybe the computer needs multiple attempts to start up. Finally one attempt "catches"...and it starts up. Sort of similar to what happens with trying to start a car in cold weather with a weak battery.
- High demand activities (especially GPU related) could over-stress a weak/old power supply...and the computer suddenly shuts off.
- A whistling or whining sound coming from the computer.
- Faint "electrical smoke" smell.
- Non-normal popping sounds.

In a power supply that has failed. Sometimes if this happens while a user is using the computer:

- There can be a large POP or BANG sound.
- A large amount of stinky electrical smoke (that could possibily be seen).
- A short or long whistling or whining sound before the pop or bang.
- Computer won't start up at all. No display light, no HD spin-up, no startup chime. Nada...stone cold dead.

Some stuff I've experienced.:)

OK, that's a pretty good "failed" and hint summery Nick, and I'm sure most know of that any amount of stinky electrical smoke and horrible stink smell, but I dare say, no such Mac is failing when that happens, it's already FAILED, and big time too!!! :'(

I searched my power supply part number. Do you have any idea what the single small black wire is for.

I think that we need to resolve the question of what part do you have? If you got a power supply for a Late 2009 iMac (which the beginning of this thread seems to indicate)...then it's not going to work in an August, 2007 iMac.

Would you believe Frankhines different countries have different coloured wires?

You got that right… and one can be dead if they get it wrong… :(

Now, Is the black wire live or neutral?
https://www.reference.com/science/black-wire-live-neutral-b226cec1d9604bbe

Or…http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/reference/chpt-2/wiring-color-codes/

Or was that black wire neutral that could be almost at the same potential as the white or should that be the same as the green ground??

Hey, maybe there's even a new wire color "standard" by now. That's an older Mac model!!! Smirk… :D

The power supply that was in the iMac was a ADP-250AF B. The unit I bought was ADP-250AF with out the B. They both have anther part number of 614-0432 they both have this number.

It does not look like is on the AC input side. That connector is a three prong. Then there is a ribbon cable that goes to the display and a 12 pin connection. All three of them are good The problem is a single small gauge wire 28 or even 30. It plugs into connector marked cn103 on the power supply board. The old PS has only on pin the new one has two.
